Wetlands - Wetlands - Crane Reintroduction
(40)

Nick Upton photographed the Great Crane Project for 2020VISION, involving the reintroduction of 40 cranes to the Somerset Levels, during 2010 and 2011. Eggs were collected in Germany, hatched and reared (by surrogate human parents dressed as cranes) at Slimbridge by the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust and then released in the Somerset Levels. The free flying birds have survived severe winter weather and now roam freely through the grazing marshes and arable fields of the Somerset Levels, where it is hoped they will soon create a viable breeding population.
