Bristol is Britain's first European Green Capital in 2015, following on from Stockholm, Hamburg, Nantes and Copenhagen. European Green Capiital is a prestigious annual award designed to promote and reward the efforts of cities to improve the environment. Bristol won this award in 2015 due to its high environmental standards and ambitious goals. Bristol uses less energy per household than any other major UK city and has the highest cycling rates. One third of the city is open green or blue space and Bristol also has a thriving green economy.
