The Cerrado biodiversity hotspots covers more than 20% of the land area of Brazil and is the only hotspot comprised mainly of wooded savanna. It is notable for its high proportion (more than 40%) of endemic plants, which include the spectacular Tabebuia trees and the "buriti" palm. Typical large animal species of this hotspot include the giant anteater, giant armadillo, maned wolf, greater rhea, crested seriema and hyacinth macaw.
