The Guinean Forests of West Africa stretch from Guinea to Cameroon, and include scattered forest fragments in Sierre Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as several islands in the Gulf of Guinea. This hotspot is home to more than a quarter of all Africa's mammal species and is exceptionally important for primate conservation, with no less than 18 endemic species. It is also the original home of the oil palm and, the goliath frog and the pygmy hippopotamus. Less than 15% of the original forest cover remains, and this is under threat from logging and hunting for bush meat.
