The Japanese archipelago is made up of more than 3000 islands and stretches from the humid subtropical Ryukyu Islands to the boreal forests of Hokkaido. This hotspot supports a wide range of ecosystems and climatic zones, including extensive mountain areas. Endemism is high amongst mammals and amphibians (including the world's most northerly primate), while around a third of 5600 plant species is endemic. Principal threats to biodiversity come from introduced mammals which prey on endemic birds and small mammals, and industrial and tourist development.
