The Philippines is one of the most threatened of all Biodiversity Hotspots, with only 7% of its original rainforest cover remaining. It has one of the highest levels of endemic vertebrates of all hotspots, with more than 100 mammal species and more then 180 bird species which occur nowhere else. These include the Philippine monkey-eating eagle, the Visayan wrinkled hornbill, the Philippine cockatoo, the Tamaraw and eight species of cloud rat.
