The Cape Floristic Kingdom lies entirely within South Africa and is the home of more than 6000 endemic plant species, including 12 endemic families. The characteristic habitat type is called fynbos, which also holds high levels of endemic reptiles and amphibians, especially tortoises, including the Geometric tortoise, one of the rarest tortoise species in the world.
