Caption
1720 illustration of 'small cape lizard' from southern Africa. Apparently a very devout lizard, it carried three crosses on its back. Henri Chatelain appears to have published the original in French in his 'Decorative images of People and Animals, with a map of Southern Africa' 1720. This image comes from Thomas Astley and John Green's 'A new general collection of voyages and travels; consisting of the most esteemed relations, which have been hitherto published in any language comprehending everything remarkable in its kind' circa 1740.
