Caption
Skull of Cave Bear (Ursus uralensis), an extinct species of bear found in western Russia's Ural mountians and region. It is one of a complex of large extinct 'speleoid' or 'cave bear like' species that ranged across Eurasia. Males' skulls were significantly larger than the largest European brown bears. Though doubtless formidable animals, their omnivorous diet is assumed to be more vegetarian than any current species of bear. They lacked developed premolars and their incisors bow outwards perhaps as an adaptation towards grazing. Their extinction is believed to have happened between 30 and 15 thousand years ago.
