Steeply dipping beds of Carboniferous age sandstone and shales (Culm measures) on the flank of a large fold. This deformation was formed by compression during the Variscan or Hercynian orogeny, a geologic mountain-building event caused by Late Paleozoic continental collision between Euramerica (Laurussia) and Gondwana to form the supercontinent of Pangea.
