Illustration of 'The Entomologist'. Rare copper print with original hand colouring, drawn by George Spratt, printed by George Madely, and sold individually as part of a series through Charles Tilt's Fleet Street print shop. George Spratt (1784-c.1840) was a memeber of the Royal College of Surgeons but also an artist. He illustrated the two volume 'Flora Medica' (1829). The entomologist is here made-up of the objects of his own fascination. A Garden tiger moth makes up his body, catterpillars his arms, his hat and hair a grasshopper, beetle and damselfly. He carries a 'tong net' to catch a blue butterfly. A small net typical of the time, and of the sort Darwin (a fanatical entomologist) would have been familiar.
