Illustration of Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Plate 2 (and 3) Propithecus satyrus. 'The Red or Asiatic Orangutang' (sic). The orangutan was the first great ape to be well known in Europe and Britain. One called Jenny was of great interest to Darwin when it arrived in London zoo in 1837 (he visited in 1838 after his Beagle voyage). He was greatly impressed by its emotional complexity and intelligence.
