Description
Mediterranean forest fire. During the summer months of 2007, Greece witnessed the greatest forest fire disaster to date. Forest fires throughout Greece burned approximately 270,000 hectars, 63 people died,500 homes burned, 6000 people became homeless, 4.5 million olive trees burned as well as 60.000 goats and sheep. This image was taken on September 6, 2007 after a forest fire in the Corinth prefecture, Peloponnese. The great majority of trees in the picture are common Mediterranean pines (Pinus halepensis) 2. See related photos of the fire that devastated those trees. Notice the fire protection zone (trees cleared by the forest service) that stopped the fire and prevented the burning of the pines on the left of the picture. Greece.
