Description
Rajah Brooke's Birdwing male (Trogonoptera brookiana) shown with a specimen signature of Alfred Russel Wallace who named it for his friend Sir James Brooke. Wallace is remembered as the co-discoverer of evolution by natural selection with Darwin. Brooke was the famous 'White Rajah' of Sarawak and Wallace had been his guest in 1855 when he discovered this butterfly. Male T. brookiana can be seen in large numbers near mineral rich seeps. The plainer females seldom come from the canopy and were once considered to be outnumbered by the males 1000:1. We now know the ratio is more nearly equal.
