Description
Skull of an Asian elephant (without its tusks) showing how the high nasal orifice for the trunk gives the impression of a single large eye socket. There is evidence that fossil elephant skulls (prehistoric dwarf elephants were found on Cyprus, Crete, Malta and Sicily) were known in ancient Greece and placed in positions of high regard as founding evidence of one eyed giants - the Cyclops. This theory was put forward by Othenio Abel in 1914.
