Description
The history of life, proposed by Swiss-American naturalist Louis Agassiz. Agassiz would disagree strongly with Darwin's theory of evolution. This diagram from 1855 shows how he understood biological history. The center of the circle is "day one" of Genesis, and the present day is the outer perimeter. God independently creates groups of animals in the various 'spokes' of the wheel, they exist for a while and then go extinct. Humans were created in the outermost layer at the top. The little crown is to signify our own species as the crowning glory of God's creation.'Crust of the Earth as related to Zoology'. Coloured frontis from Outlines of Comparative Physiology, Touching the Structure and Development of the Races of Animals, Living and Extinct, Thomas Wright. Agassiz, Louis and Gould, A.A.:London, H.G. Bohn, 1855.
