Description
Volunteer field assistant recording data from an anaesthetised platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) as it starts to recover from the anesthetic. It was anaesthetised so a temporary radio transponder could be glued to its, allowing researchers to track its movements. Body measurements, blood, urine and DNA samples were also taken.
The research they and others are undertaking will help scientists better understand the impacts of some of the potential threatening processes to this iconic monotreme, and as such hopefully help safeguarding the species' future - which is now listed as near threatened under the IUCN.
Snowy River banks, Dalgety, NSW, Australia. September, 2017. Model released.
