Description
White-backed vultures (Gyps africanus) and spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) pick at the drying and deflated skin of an elephant carcass (Loxodonta africana), Laikipia Plateau, Kenya. The hyenas are tinted a reddish-brown from days of walking in and out of the elephant's body cavity. The elephant was killed by government officials after it killed a man walking home late at night. White-backed vultures are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to severe population declines caused by loss of their primary food source (dead wildlife) and poisoning by farmers.
