Description
Woodcut illustration of the 'Monster of Krakow' was reported widely in the mid sixteenth century as a real occurence. It was seen by many protestants as a monstrous symptom of divine displeasure at the Papacy. Such portents of impending doom were popular with Lutherans. Jacob Reuff in 1554 wrote 'it is said that this monster was caused of God's making; nonetheless through the sin of Sodomy, this detestable monster was of man's own making'. The beast was reported to have died only four hours after it was born, but before it did it uttered the apocalyptic words 'Be watchful, the Lord cometh'. The strange chimaeric heads on its joints were a sign of a demonic production.
