Description
Woodcut of Auroch (Bos primigenius) from Gesner's 'Icones Animalium' 1560, with later colouring. Published by Christoph Froschover, Zurich. Hirsfogel's near identical picture of the auroch has the inscription 'I am a urus, called by the Poles a thur, by the Germans an aurox and hitherto also a bison by the ignorant'. The confusion may be due to the rarity of both animals in Europe - the Auroch less than a century from going extinct, primarily due to hunting. They are represented in European cave paintings, but were largely forgotten until the 19th century.
