Desolate, arid and wild, the Northern Territory is Australia's picture-book outback. It encompasses the central portion of Australia known as the red heart (so named because of the colour of the sun-seared rock, sand and soil), in which rests the world's largest rock; Uluru or Ayer's Rock. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also contains the world-famous Olgas range, is one of the Northern Territory's world heritage sites. The other is Kakadu National Park, which is notable for its wildlife and some of the best examples of Aboriginal rock art in Australia.
