New South Wales is Australia's most populous continent and the site of Captain James Cook's original landing in Australia. Bordered on the west with South Australia, the two states combined are mostly arid desert (the latter state being the driest on the continent).
However, there is much more besides sand to be found in these states, with nearly a thousand national parks between them. Rainforests, spectacular waterfalls, vast plains and mountain ranges combine with some of the best bushwalking and coastal drives in Australia.
