"When I decided to become a wildlife photographer, I found both the solitude and the wildlife I was looking for in the Alaskan Arctic".
"But during my early years in the Arctic, although I saw many coastal animals, I never encountered a polar bear. I never planned to photograph polar bears in Alaska at all". These are the words of photographer Steven Kazlowski, whose first encounter with a polar bear has since compelled him to create one of the best photographic documents of this species to date.
But less than a decade after Kazlowski spotted his first polar bear, his latest book, published by Braided River in February 2008, is ironically titled The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World. This truth, the tragic effect that global warming is having on the Arctic habitat of these magnificent animals, is supported by statistics which suggest that two-thirds of the polar bear’s habitat will disappear by 2050, with only a handful of them remaining by 2080. When, in May 2008, the US government listed the polar bear as a threatened species, they became the first large mammal whose decline has been attributed to climate change.
