« Lorsque j’ai décidé de devenir un photographe de nature, j’ai découvert la solitude et la vie sauvage que je recherchais dans les régions arctiques de l’Alaska. J’ai passé ma jeunesse en arctique où j’ai pu observer de nombreux animaux qui venaient sur les côtes, mais je n’avais jamais rencontré d’ours polaire et je n’aurais jamais pensé pouvoir en photographier en Alaska. »

C’est ainsi que Steven Kazlowski relate sa première rencontre avec un ours polaire, qui le conduisit par la suite à faire les plus belles photographies de cet animal jamais réalisées à ce jour.
Ironie du sort, moins de 10 ans après sa rencontre avec son premier ours, il titre son livre, publié en février 2008 chez Braided River « The Last Polar Bear : Facing the Truth of a Warming World » (Le Dernier Ours Polaire : Face à la Réalité du Réchauffement Climatique). Cette tragique réalité des effets du réchauffement climatique sur les ours polaires est étayée par des statistiques selon lesquelles les 2/3 de son habitat disparaîtra d’ici 2050, et qu’il ne survivra qu’une poignée d’individus d’ici 2080. Lorsqu’en Mai 2008 le gouvernement américain ajouta l’ours polaire à la liste des espèces menacées, ce dernier devint par la même le premier grand mammifère dont le déclin est directement lié au changement climatique.
Les photos de Kazlowski nous informent, nous interpellent, célèbrent ce majestueux animal et nous forcent par cela à chercher une solution face au danger qui le menace. Son projet « Last Polar Bear » (le Dernier Ours Polaire) a fait l’objet d’une exposition au Burke Museum de Washington et a ensuite circulé dans tous les USA, en association à des campagnes d’éducation.

Steven Kazlowski est titulaire d’un diplôme en biologie marine de l’université de Towson. Ses photos on été publiées dans les magazines TIME, National Wildlife, Newsweek, Sierra, Audubon, Backpacker, Canadian Geographic, et National Geographic Kids. Il a réalisé les photos de 3 livres : "Alaska’s Bears of the North"," Alaska Wildlife Impressions" et "The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World". Au sein de la communauté des photographes de nature, il est connu pour ses dons d’observation et sa détermination à capturer une image dans des conditions atmosphériques extrêmes. Il vit la plupart du temps en Alaska, toujours en quête de la photo exceptionnelle.
