Description
Illustration of extinct Thylacine / Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacinus cyanocephalus) engraved by W. Lizars. From Jardine's series 'The Naturalist's Library; Mammalia' 1841 ('The Natural History of Marsupialia or Pouched Animals' 1841 by G.R. Waterhouse). The animal was first described and illustrated for European science in 1808, but it remained unfamiliar in Europe up to the time of its probable extinction in 1930. This depiction is not very accurate anatomically, revealing the animal as still rather unfamiliar at the time. Recent work by Paul D. Stewart has identified Dutch Ambonese VOC engravings with appear to illustrate a thylacine from as early as 1724. The thylacine was hunted as a pest species - though the threat they posed to livestock is questioned. Some still hope the thylacine may hold on in a relict population, claiming that reported 'post-extinction' sightings support the claim.
