Description
Illustration of Viscacha (Lagidium sp.). Plate 42 from Volume 1 Trans Zool Soc London, 1835, 'Additional remarks on the Genus Lagotis, with some account of a second species referrible to it' with contemporary hand colouring as issued. The plate illustrates the first scientific description and naming of the species in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (communicated to ZSL by E.T. Bennet May 26 1835). This plate was engraved and painted by Zeitler. Bennet notes that the animal is described from only one skin obtained by Mr. Gould taken from Chile (who would later take on Darwin's Beagle bird specimens and identify the finches). the animal shows adaptive morphological convergence on lagomorph rabbits.
