Professor Dr. An Martel, University of Ghent, taking a swab from a Fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) to check whether any DNA of the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis is present. The Fire salamander came from the Robertville forest in Belgium. An outbreak was detected in this forest in 2014. Some of the sick animals were successfully treated at the University of Ghent. Professor Dr. An Martel and Professor Dr. Frank Pasmans from University of Ghent discovered the fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans in 2013 which was responsible for the near extinction of the entire fire salamander population in the Netherlands.
