Description
Sir Joseph Banks, botanist and naturalist. (13th February 1743 - 19th June 1820). Engraving by C.E. Wagstaff with later colouring, after the painting of Banks as President of the Royal Society by Phillips 1809. Banks became one of the most influential naturalists of the early 19th century. This image was calculated to show the solid status and power of the Royal Societies president. He made his reputation as the botanist on Cook's first Endeavour voyage. His collections of the Australian flora were unrivalled, and his interest in Australia continued throughout his career. In 1778 he was made president of the Royal Society, a position he held until his death. During that time he increased the standing of the institution and the natural sciences in general. His patronage led to many discoveries during the period and he fostered an international outlook for British science.
