Vainqueur du prestigieux prix Pulitzer, Jack Dykinga mélange adroitement la photo d’art au documentaire et au photojournalisme avec ses paysages grand format. Il collabore régulièrement aux magazines Arizona Highways et National Geographic, sans compter de nombreuses autres publications, comme Audubon ou Harpers and Time, ainsi que des beaux livres servant la cause environnementale et la nature. Il est lui-même l’auteur d'un dizaine de beaux livres de photographie nature et de guides sur la photographie de paysage.
Ses tirages d’art ont été exposés avec ceux d’Ansel Adams dans une importante rétrospective, et en 2008 la galerie G2 de Venice (Californie) lui a consacré une exposition dédiée. Son reportage sur le Canyon Stone a été élu parmi les plus beaux 40 reportages de tous les temps par l'ILCP en avril 2010. En mars 2011 il a été primé Oustanding Photographer of the Year par l'association des photographes d'Amérique du nord (NANPA).
Son engagement dans des actions pour la sauvegarde de l’environnement est très importante. Membre du comité du Parc National de Sonoran, il travaille actuellement à la création d’un nouveau parc transfrontalier couvrant l'Arizona, le Sonoran et le Mexique. Il a souvent travaillé sur les régions frontalières du Texas et du Mexique, mettant en valeur la biodiversité des zones protégées le long du corridor du Rio Grande. Jack Dykinga est l'un des membres fondateurs de l’International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). Il vit avec sa femme Margaret vivent à Tucson en Arizona.
