Cameraman à la BBC, David Shale a commencé sa carrière comme océanographe, spécialiste des abysses pour l’Institut Océanographique anglais. C’est en collaborant à la série Blue Planet (La planète bleue) qu’il est venu à photographier les animaux des abysses.
Membre de nombreuses expéditions scientifiques explorant les zones les plus inaccessibles de nos océans, il a eu le privilège de disposer des toutes dernières technologies pour photographier les créatures étranges qui sont remontées à la surface et ainsi contribué à déterminer des espèces encore inconnues à la science.
« Photographier les créatures des grandes profondeurs sous-marines se révèle à chaque fois être une véritable épreuve», explique Shale. »« Il nous arrive de travailler jusqu’à 8 heures d’affilée dans une chambre froide, sur un bateau tanguant en pleine obscurité sur l’océan. C’est une exigence afin de pouvoir mener ses sujets correctement. Mais ce n’est rien en comparaison de l’expérience ultime que je vis, quand j’aperçois une première fois les créatures surgir des grandes profondeurs, et quand je les récolte et les photographie »
Les étonnantes photos de ces créatures rares et insolites ont été publiées dans de nombreux magazines prestigieux et dans de nombreux livre dont « Deeper than light », publié par Bergen Museum Press et Creatures of the Deep de Erich Hoyt publié par Firefly Books.
