Triage coordinator and Senior Forest and Wildlife Officer Abby Smith - sitting in a Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) C-27J Spartan - holding a young koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) that was burnt in the Mallacoota bushfires and is now being evacuated from the Mallacoota wildlife triage centre to Melbourne further treatment by Zoos Victoria veterinarian staff. Looking on is triage assistant and zoo keeper from Zoos Victoria, Jess MacDonald. Six koalas were evacuated that day by the air force. Despite best efforts by the Zoos Victoria veterinarian team. this koala (called 'Micky') later died from renal failure.
