Hatchetfish (Maurolicus walvisensis) ventral view portrait, showing photophores beneath its body, emitting bioluminescent light. This glow, directed downward through light-guides, likely serves as counterillumination visible only from below. Observed during RV Sonne, Cruise SO285, South Atlantic, Benguela upwelling region off the coast of South Africa and Namibia. Captive.
