Caption
White-backed vultures (Gyps africanus) feed in a frenzy at a waterbuck carcass (Kobus ellipsiprymnus), Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique. Waterbuck are large animals with tough hides, and in Gorongosa, vultures struggle to open their carcasses without the help of hyenas. This carcass was opened by biologists as part of an experiment, allowing the vultures to access all the carrion inside. Most of the meat from this 350-pound animal will be eaten in just a couple of hours. This photo was taken by a remote camera buried next to the carcass, set to trigger automatically every 30 seconds.
