The red squirrel is the UK's only native squirrel species, but its range and population has contracted dramatically in the last 100 years, since the introduction of the grey squirrel. Thriving populations of red squirrels are still found in the North of England and especially in Scotland, where Peter Cairns and Mark Hamblin photographed them for 2020VISION in the Caledonian pine forests.
