Bruno D'Amicis lives among the mountains of Abruzzi, in Central Italy. After getting his MSc in Biology in 2004, he began working as a freelance nature photographer with a special interest in endangered species and conservation issues. His images and words have been published in books, magazines, calendars and brochures. He has worked as researcher for the National Geographic Magazine, photography teacher, editor and columnist. He is a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP).



His mission for WWoE took him to the Tatra mountains. ^In spring 2009 I photographed brown bears in their spectacular mountain habitat in the Slovak Tatra. I had already been working in the area for four years, and expected that Spring to bring many bear cubs. But the work was not easy. I did not put out any bait to attract these elusive animals, but instead chose to wait for them in the alpine meadows. I slept outside in the mountains and walked along the ridges in an attempt to spot the bears before approaching them. My backpack full of food, equipment and a long lens was a heavy burden. I hope the results of my effort will help preserve the nature of one of the last mountain wilderness areas of Europe.^
