Niall Benvie is a Scottish photographer and writer who has travelled extensively around northern and Baltic Europe, as well as his home country during the last two decades. In the last few years he has explored alternative ways of representing the natural world and our relationship with it.
^My job for Wild Wonders was to produce a range of pictures of plants and creatures in my field studio. The subject is photographed against a brilliant white background - and always in the field - to reveal a level of detail rarely possible in conventional photography. During my first assignment in the Austrian Tyrol, I was struck by the impression these pictures made on people when I let them see the image magnified on the back of the camera. I also travelled to Spain to photograph the common (actually, very elusive) chameleon and France where the spectacular Spanish luna moth was the objective. All this work was made possible only with the help of many friends and reserve managers. Biologists can be very generous people.^
