The Atlantic Coast hotspot stretches along the Atlantic coast of Brazil and extends into neighbouring Argentina and Paraguay. It has exceptional levels of endemic plants, with more than 8000 species, and also amongst amphibians (280 species) and birds (140 species). There are also more than 80 species of endemic mammals, including the maned sloth and four species of lion tamarin. The region has suffered from deforestation for more than 400 years and is now threatened by agricultural development, increasing human population and the rapid industrialisation of Brazil.
