The Caribbean Islands biodiversity hotspot boasts exceptionally high levels of both animal and plant biodiiversity. There are 6500 endemic plant species, 409 endemic reptiles, 170 endemic amphibians (100% of species occurring here), 163 endemic birds and 41 endemic mammals. Highlights include the Cuban crocodile, the Cuban bee hummingbird (the world's smallest bird), the St Lucia and St Vincent parrots, and 9 species of rock iguana. Only 10% of original vegetation remains intact, and the Caribbean Islands have been severely impacted by agricultural and tourist development, deforestation and the impact of introduced species.
