Hotspots - California (87) More files...
The California Floristic Province is one of only five areas with a Mediterranean-type climate in the world. This hotspot contains a wide variety of ecosystems, including sagebrush steppe, prickly pear shrubland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, juniper-pine woodland, redwood forests, coastal dunes, and salt marshes. Today, about 25 per cent of the original vegetation remains in more or less pristine condition. The region has a very high level of endemic plants, more than 20 endemic amphibians and 10 endemic bird species, including the endanged Californian condor.
